Description

FINALLY my contest entry for :icondedizenoflight:'s Literary Senshi contest!! :la: I picked Edgar Allan Poe and Jules Verne, because I love both soooo much and have like over 15 books from Verne and many short story collections from Poe and OMG I love everything about those men and their genres and styles and STORIES. :worship: When I had read the rules and idea things and remembered these two guys, I immediately knew how I would draw the Senshi girls. (I wished I could have taken Haruki Murakami as third entry, though, haha. :B)

Well, now for the little info sheets on the Senshi (I did NOT come up with infos on Senshi powers, cause I don't know what plans you have for the team, Dezi):

:bulletblack:Sailor A-Poe (or Sailor Poe, but I liked the 'A' with it)

Author: Edhar Allan Poe
Design inspiration: Gothic/ Gothic Lolita/ Victorian Maiden elements
Colour scheme: Black, lilac
Eyes: Light green
Skin: Pale, blamish free
Hair: Long, black, artificial curls
Flower: Lilac Aster
Symbols: Gothic Cross, Black Raven
Details on the fuku: Headpiece, blouson hides dekoltée, corsage, long back bow, long stockings, gloves without single holes for fingers, plateau shoes

Civilian name: Mary-Victoria Eltringham
Origin: England
Age: 18
Occupation: About to graduate highschool, signed in Art- and Design College in London
Likes: Occultism, Design, History, Horror movies (no splatter ones, but such ones with deep psychologic plots)
Dislikes: Noisy places, bright colours, sports
Personality: Silent, she is polite and romantic, but suffers from paranoia and social phobia. She spends much time with poetry and dreaming, but also thinking about 'dark' themes like death, suicide etc. She is neither suicidal nor depressive or morbid. She enjoys live and sees beauty, but in a rather Gothic-dark way. As Senshi she focussed on her task and puts all her heart and energy in what is needed to be done, because she is passionate and ad and proud to have the power to achieve things and fight enemies.

Explanation of character design considering the original Author and his works: Not only that Poe is famous for his spooky and emotionally exhausting literal works, I personally do love the genre of psycho horror he is in and how his own personality is reflected in his written words. I always shared his fear from being once buried alive and the feeling of sudden death and this is why I love his stories which deal with the natural and pure emotions in the craziest such situations. I also like the technical/ mechanic and mystic parts in his stories and to find out rational historical happenings on which they were mostly based. I decided to give the Poe-Senshi the design of a classical Gothic Lolita Senshi. Gothic Loita combines very well dark topics with romanticism and classy work (in fashion/ music/ written pieces) and so this fits perfectly to Poe, in my opinion. Also, the fashion of Aristocrat Gothic Lolita is leaned on English Victorian times from the past and so connects with Poe's biography, too. I decided to give Mary-Victoria psychologic illnesses from which Poe suffered, as well. They both live/d a nice melancholy. To round it up, her Senshi sidekick is a black raven. Nothing to say about this, right, you guys know what ravens have to do with Poe.
(PS: I am aware she looks a lot like Mana from Moi dix Mois/ Moi-même-moitié, which is no coincidence, sinde I used to be a huge Mana fan in the past and drew him many times, plus he is one of the stars of Gothic Lolita, so it's ok if there are similarities. ;D)

:bulletblack:Sailor Verne

Author: Jules Verne
Design inspiration: Survival/ Adventure, steampunk, armor/ SciFi, post apocalypse elements
Colour scheme: Brown, beige-pink/ lilac
Eyes: Dark brown
Skin: Darker tint from all weathers
Hair: Middle-dark brown, reddish in sunlight
Flower: Sunflower
Symbols: Compass, pocket clock, scars
Details on the fuku: Little 'jacket', a belt across the body/ torso (I forgot to draw it here, will add it tomorrow!!), two belts around hips, gloves with open parts and cut-off-fingers, shields on knees, also shield-metal-thing on left arm, left arm also has a 'garter'/ scarf around bizeps, boots with belts across it, creal earrings in gold, belts have golden applications.

Civilian name: Jeanne Michelle Nantes
Origin: France
Age: 16
Occupation: About to graduate highschool, signed in Art- and Design College in London
Likes: Nature laws and science, adventures, fights, candies ^^
Dislikes: Waiting and staying patient, closed rooms (except when she is on a boat or in a ballon or in a submarine), racism
Personality: Lively, loud, curious, adventurous, proud, strong, but still young and unexperienced, although already saw lots of the world. She tries to do what her heart demands, so she cancelled school with 15 to travel the world and to learn everything autodidactically. She is an outdoor and fighter girl, but also reads many many book about any scientific theme from geology, metereology, politics, biology, physics etc.

Explanation of character design considering the original Author and his works: As much as Poe inspired and influenced me in my youth with his style and works, as much did Jules Verne. Oh god, how I adore that man. In opposite to Poe's characters, Verne's charas actually leave the house (lol) and explore the world. What is mystical and psycho creepy in Poe's stories is the Sci-Fi and futurous part in Verne's. Both authors use mechanical constructions and elements in their stories to underline in a rational way either the spooky daily happenings or the outdoor adventures with suddenly weird plot turnings and SciFi gadgets. To me, it was a close thought how to design the Senshi and that she and the Poe one both represent subculteres. I wanted to give the French Senshi an adventurous and surviverish look. The shields are the little modern-Sci-Fi parts. I didn't chose more SciFi elements, because in Verne's stories they are very subtle, as well. You can see her wearing boots and handy gloves and even having scars, because as already mentioned above, she actually leaves the house and searches the challenge outside. Brwon and black are the main colours of her look, because of the clothes' colours back in that Jules-Verne-Victor-Hugo-Vive-la-revolution-times in France and also because all my super old verne books are in modest and black brown colours, too, plus contain prints of the original copper prints (is this the correct vocab?) and so fit to the main image, I guess.

So far from me. I like the guys and I hope you do, too.
